Meet Helen Alex | Color Design Analyst& Researcher | 16-Season Expertise

Helen Alex spent years in understanding The Science and Soul of Color

From Derwent Pencils to Melanin Calibration

My obsession with color didn’t start in a studio; it started at age six with a set of Derwent pencils. While other children drew houses, I was pontificating on why a sunset was “Electric Persimmon” rather than just orange. That childhood obsession turned into a rigorous professional pursuit. Over two decades, I moved from simply “liking” colors to analyzing the physiological and psychological impact they have on our presence and confidence.

Why the 12-Tone System Wasn’t Enough

For years, I practiced the traditional 12-tone method, but I saw its limitations firsthand. It failed to account for nearly 40% of my clients—those with neutral-leaning undertones or diverse ethnicities who didn’t fit into Western-centric “Spring” or “Winter” boxes. I realized that color isn’t a static category; it’s a spectrum. This led me to master the 16-Season Color Analysis System, a framework that introduces “neutral” categories to fill the gaps, providing the most precise color mapping available in 2026.

Why a Dedicated Single-Season Resource?

I am a Researcher interested in Color theory nuances . Unlike general lifestyle bloggers, my work is rooted in Melanin-Calibrated Testing. This proprietary approach ensures that color analysis is truly inclusive, accurately identifying the “misted” or “vivid” nuances in every skin tone, from fair porcelain to rich espresso.

A generalist colour-analysis blog can usually tell you which of the four broad families you likely belong to. It’s rarely built to explain the difference between Soft Summer and Light Summer — a distinction that often comes down to a few degrees of chroma, not a different colour family entirely, and gets lost in a site trying to cover twelve or sixteen seasons at once with equal shallowness.

That’s the gap this site exists to close. Summer’s three subtypes — Soft Summer, Light Summer, and True-Cool Summer — each get real depth here: hex-coded palettes rather than colour names alone, practical makeup and hair application, capsule-wardrobe planning with actual item counts, and the specific metals and neutrals that work for that subtype and not the other two.

Evidence Boundaries & Professional Scope

A few different kinds of claim show up across this site, and they don’t all carry the same weight, deliberately.

Objective colour science — how hue, value, and chroma behave, resting on more than a century of documented colour-order systems — is about as settled as this field gets.

Established seasonal frameworks — the 12- and 16-season systems, Sci/ART among them — are real, named, documented styling methodologies, not scientific consensus. Trained practitioners can and do disagree on exactly where one season ends and the next begins, and we try to represent that honestly rather than pretending the boundaries are sharper than they are.

Editorial styling interpretation — the specific advice on any given page — is informed judgement applied to a general case, held to a lower certainty than the first two categories on purpose.

softsummerpalette.com is an educational styling resource. It is not a dermatological, medical, or diagnostic service, and nothing on it should be read as one.

Editorial Corrections & Accountability

Colour analysis is a field where reasonable, trained people genuinely disagree — which makes a real corrections process more useful than a claim of infallibility would be. If something here is wrong, Contact & Corrections explains how to flag it and what happens after that.

Some links on this site are affiliate partnerships that help fund the research behind it. They’re disclosed wherever they appear, and they never decide which colour reads correctly on which undertone — that judgement stays separate from any commercial relationship, always.
Colour started as something I noticed. It’s become something I’m genuinely glad to spend this much time explaining properly, rather than reducing to a chart and a sales pitch.

Beyond the Palette

My research in marketing taught me that color is a message. My mission is to help you control that message. Whether you are a male professional seeking “Quiet Luxury” in Muted Charcoal or a creative looking for the energy of “Radiant Plum,” I provide the technical roadmap to your most vibrant self.

Color is no longer just something I see; it is an experience I am honored to share with you.
